Mergiato vs Graphite

Graphite is a hosted service for creating stacked PRs, with its own web app, AI review and merge queue. Mergiato is a desktop app for the whole life of a GitHub pull request that runs on your own GitHub CLI. They answer different questions, and they work well together: Mergiato shows Graphite's stacks and merges through its queue.

Graphite details checked on 18 October 2026, from graphite.com.

The short answer

  • Pick Graphite to create and restack stacks from a CLI, get AI review, and run a merge queue and team insights across your organization.
  • Pick Mergiato for one fast window over your PRs, with nothing to install in your organization, or when your team already uses Graphite and you want to review and merge its stacks without browser tabs.

Side by side

Graphite Mergiato
What it is A hosted service: web app, CLI, VS Code extension, Mac menu bar app A desktop app on top of GitHub
How it connects Graphite's GitHub App; in many orgs an owner has to approve it Your own gh sign-in; nothing to install in the org
What it keeps Your profile, an encrypted GitHub token, and usage and repository metadata on its servers Nothing off your machine; no servers
Creating and restacking Yes, its core: the gt CLI No; it shows and merges stacks made with any tool
Stacks it shows Graphite's Graphite's, GitHub's own and plain branch chains
Merge queue Its own (basic on Team, advanced on Enterprise) Uses Graphite's queue or GitHub's, whichever the repo has
AI review Built in; limited on Hobby and Starter, unlimited on Team Not built in; optional, through the AI command-line tool you've installed
Team features Insights, Slack notifications, automations None; it's one person's window
Also in the box Chat, MCP Per-job CI re-runs, Vercel previews, a terminal under each PR
Price Free Hobby (personal repos); $20 Starter and $40 Team per user per month, billed yearly; Enterprise on request Free while in beta
Runs on The web, plus its CLI macOS today; more platforms are coming

Using both

If your team stacks with Graphite, Mergiato fits around it:

  • It reads Graphite's stack comment, so the stack on each PR includes PRs already merged out of it.
  • Its Merge button adds Graphite's queue label, reads Merge 2 PRs when the PRs below go too, and shows when a PR is queued and merging.
  • Each PR has a Graphite button that copies its link, or opens it there with ⌘-click.

Keep gt for creating and restacking; use Mergiato to review, re-run checks and merge. More on that in stacked PRs in Mergiato.

Where Graphite is the better pick

  • You want a CLI to create, restack and submit stacks.
  • You want AI review and summaries on every PR, for the whole team.
  • You want merge queue settings and insights managed for your organization.
  • Your team reviews in the browser on any OS.

Where Mergiato is the better pick

  • Your security team won't approve another GitHub App. Mergiato needs none: here's exactly what it can access.
  • You want your inbox, diffs, checks, stack and merge in one desktop window, not a set of tabs.
  • You review big PRs: Mergiato shows every file, up to GitHub's 3,000.
  • You want to try something today without a team decision or a bill.

Questions

Is Mergiato a Graphite alternative?

For reviewing and merging, yes: inbox, diffs, threads, checks, stacks and merges. For creating and restacking stacks, no; keep the Graphite CLI or git for that.

Do I need a Graphite account to see stacks in Mergiato?

No. Mergiato also reads GitHub's own stacks and plain branch chains. When your team uses Graphite, it reads Graphite's stack comments too.

Does Mergiato send my code anywhere?

No. Requests go from your machine straight to GitHub through your GitHub CLI. There are no Mergiato servers.

Review and merge your Graphite stacks in one window.

Free while in beta, under 10 MB, and it signs in through your GitHub CLI.
